Il est considéré par plusieurs flamencologues, notamment Félix Grande et Guillermo Castro Buendía comme le meilleur guitariste de flamenco de tous les temps, et l'un des meilleurs instrumentistes de l'histoire de la guitare. Compositeur prolifique, il a notamment apporté des innovations importantes à la guitare flamenca.
Le choix n’est pas anodin : Paco de Lucía met un point d’honneur à aborder en tant que guitariste flamenco l'un des plus grands chefs-d’œuvre de la musique classique espagnole, et ce dès sa création en 1940. Incapable de lire une partition de musique, le défi est de taille.
