De retour à New York, Walton entame réellement sa carrière de musicien puisqu'entre 1958 et 1961 il joue notamment avec Kenny Dorham, participe en 1959 à l'album Giant Steps de John Coltrane, rejoint l'orchestre de J. J. Johnson puis l'ensemble de Benny Golson - Art Farmer de 1960 à 1961 2 .
