Ghost in the Machine is the fourth studio album by British rock band the Police. The album was released on 2 October 1981 by A&M Records. The songs were recorded between January and September 1981 during sessions that took place at AIR Studios in Montserrat and Le Studio in Quebec, assisted by record producer Hugh Padgham.

Zenyatta Mondatta also saw the band's lyrics turning towards political events, with Sting's "Driven to Tears" commenting on poverty and Copeland's "Bombs Away" referring to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. These themes became more prevalent on the Police's next album, Ghost in the Machine. Title

Ghost In The Machine was recorded and mixed at AIR Studios on Montserrat - between 1981-06-21 and 1981-07-27. The first song to be recorded was Demolition Man, a song that Sting originally composed for Zenyatta Mondatta, but was left off that album. It was chosen to be the first song as it was supposedly easy to record.
