In a career spanning more than six decades, he has been a member of many bands and has moved through a variety of musical genres, from early R&B, psychedelic improvisational rock of the 1960s, folk, country music, arena rock in the 1970s, and blues.

Pete Sears has played keyboards or bass guitar with many artists, including Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, John Lee Hooker, and Moonalice. He has also written and performed songs with his wife Jeannette Sears, and collaborated with Jorma Kaukonen, Jerry Garcia, and others.
Pete Sears quitte Starship avant la sortie de No Protection, et Grace Slick le suit en 1988. Malgré ces départs, un troisième album voit le jour, Love Among the Cannibals (1989), avant que le manager Bill Thomson ne dissolve le groupe en 1990.
