A gentleman burglar is a detective, which acts as a shield to his more shady pastime. After Henry Banfield and his wife separate, each takes one of their sons to rear. The boy reared by the mother in poverty becomes a thief and eventually gains notoriety as a gentleman crook called Raffles.
