Willem de Kooning est un peintre américano-hollandais et un membre majeur du mouvement expressionniste abstrait. Sans doute surtout connu pour ses tableaux de femmes, sa célèbre peinture Woman I (1950 – 1952) présente une surface fortement élaborée mêlée à sa signature au style gestuel.
Cette exposition est la première rétrospective en France de Willem de Kooning, artiste hollandais naturalisé américain, et l’un des initiateurs de l’expressionnisme abstrait américain. Elle rassemble quatre-vingt peintures, une centaine de dessins, et sept sculptures.
