Canton, ou Guangzhou, fut à ses débuts dénommée Panyu (Chinois: 番禺; Jyutping: Pun1 Jyu4), un nom emprunté à la dénomination de deux montagnes entourant la ville actuelle, Pan et Yu. Son histoire commence lors de la conquête de la région durant la dynastie des Qin.
