9 févr. 2020 · Because Ray was recording for Atlantic. I just thought we were really doing an instrumental, and Ray was just going to feature me. But what he did is, he set it up. It was called Ray Charles Presents Fathead. It was like setting me up. And hence, from that recording on, I became an Atlantic artist, and I signed a contract then. David Newman

His professional career began in 1954 as an original member of Ray Charles' Band. Newman had a prolific recording and performing career. Newman got his nickname in high school music class.

David "Fathead" Newman (February 24, 1933 - January 20, 2009) was an American jazz and rhythm-and-blues saxophonist who made numerous recordings as a session musician and leader, but is most well known for his work as a sideman on seminal 1950's and early 1960's recordings by singer-pianist Ray Charles.
When Ray started his own band, he called on David to be part of his group. In 1954, David began a twelve year association with the Ray Charles Band.
