Founded by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan in honor of her mother, Rita Hayworth, who died as a result of Alzheimer’s disease, the first Rita Hayworth Gala was held in New York in 1984. The event expanded to Chicago in 1987. Combined, the Rita Hayworth Galas have raised more than $86 million for the cause.

For years, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan had known that something was desperately wrong with her mother, actress Rita Hayworth. In 1981, doctors gave a name—Alzheimer's—to the Hollywood legend's memory loss and sudden rages, but they couldn't help her daughter slow the disease's steady progression.

It was a tragic result of her years-long battle with Alzheimer's disease, which was still shrouded in mystery at the time. Since Hayworth's demise, her daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan, made it a duty to raise awareness of the disease.
