Christiaan Karel Appel (pronounced [ˈkrɪstijaːn ˈkaːrəl ˈɑpəl] ⓘ; 25 April 1921 – 3 May 2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet. He started painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s.

3 mai 2006 · Biography. Karel Appel is born in 1921 in a modest neighborhood of Amsterdam as the son of a hairdresser. For his 15th birthday, his uncle, an amateur painter, gives him a box of oil paints and an easel. The uncle instructs him in the first steps, but soon refers him to his own instructor, who teaches Appel the craft.
