Captain Bambridge died in 1943 as a result of a chill caught whilst out shooting on the estate. Elsie Bambridge was the only surviving child of Rudyard Kipling and used her inheritance and the substantial royalties from his books to refurbish and refurnish Wimpole for the next thirty years. In 1953 she had Kendall's East and West wings taken down.
Captain and Mrs Bambridge (1938–1976) Captain George and Mrs Elsie Bambridge first rented Wimpole in 1938 and had bought it by 1942. The only surviving child of Rudyard Kipling, Elsie Bambridge was able to use the substantial royalties from her father’s books to refurbish the house.

During the First World War, Kipling’s son John was killed at the Battle of Loos in September 1915. On 27 September 1926, at the age of 60, Kipling was featured on the cover of Time Magazine. On the night of 12 January 1936, Kipling suffered a haemorrhage in his small intestine, and on 18 January 1936, he died.
