The school was originally situated on Howe Street in Freeman’s Bay, where Auckland Girls Grammar School is now located. It moved to its current site on Mountain Road in Epsom in 1916. As of 2020, it has 2606 students, making it the third largest school in New Zealand.

During the Depression of the 1880s, girls from the Girls’ High School joined the Auckland College and Grammar School as it was then known, mainly out of economic necessity. In 1899, the School once again became known as Auckland Grammar School, but girls remained on the roll until 1909.

In 1917 Auckland Grammar School's sister school was established, Epsom Girls' Grammar School. In 1922, Mount Albert Grammar School was established as part of Auckland Grammar School. Both schools have since become separate institutions.
In 1906, because of increased numbers, the decision was made to create a Girls' Grammar School. Annie Whitelaw was appointed the first Headmistress of this new school - Auckland Girls' Grammar School - in 1907. The school moved to its present site in Howe Street in 1909.
