Né en 1940, ayant vécu en Afrique du Sud jusqu’à l’âge de soixante-deux ans, J. M. Coetzee aura passé l’essentiel de son existence sous l’apartheid. S’il a habité en Angleterre, puis aux Etats-Unis, de 1962 à 1972, il n’a jamais pu y oublier ses origines.
