Écrivain noir américain, Ralph Ellison n'a publié qu'un seul roman de son vivant, Invisible Man (Homme invisible, pour qui chantes-tu ? ), en 1952. Ce livre fut immédiatement reconnu comme l'un des plus grands textes de fiction de l'après-guerre (l'auteur reçut le National Book Award en 1953).
