Primarily a staff officer during and after World War I, Jodl served as head of the department of national defense in the war ministry.

Né à Würzburg (Bavière) le 10 mai 1890, Alfred Jodl servit dans l’armée impériale allemande durant la Première Guerre mondiale en tant qu’officier d’artillerie. Après la guerre, il continu de servir dans la Reichswehr et rencontra Hitler en 1923, il ne tarda pas à le suivre.
