This release contains Jimmy Smith’s complete classic 1962 LP "Bashin’ –The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith" (Verve V6-8474), featuring the leader backed by a big band, and showcased in a trio set. The material consists of a combination between old standards and originals arranged by Oliver Nelson.
Ed's drumming contributes significantly to the success of the Nelson items (tracks 1 to 4). Oliver Nelson's arrangements let Jimmy Smith have his head, without the all-star big band always joining in. It is as if the band is punctuating Smith's monologues.
