Fairport Convention are an English folk rock band, formed in 1967 by guitarists Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol, bassist Ashley Hutchings and drummer Shaun Frater (with Frater replaced by Martin Lamble after their first gig).
Fairport Convention est composé au départ de Judy Dyble (chant), Ian MacDonald (chant), Richard Thompson (guitare), Simon Nicol (guitare), Ashley Hutchings (basse) et Shaun Frater (batterie). Ce dernier laisse sa place à Martin Lamble dès la fin de leur premier concert.
Ils s'adjoindront pour leur premier concert les services du guitariste Richard Thompson et du batteur Shaun Frater. Ce dernier sera aussitôt remplacé par Martin Lamble qui aura réussi à convaincre le reste du groupe comme quoi il était meilleur pour ce poste.
