Alexander Duff (born April 26, 1806, Moulin, Perthshire, Scot.—died Feb. 12, 1878, Edinburgh) was the Church of Scotland’s first missionary to India, highly influential on later missionary endeavours through his promotion of higher education.

Scottish missionary in India and missiologist. Duff was born in Moulin, Perthshire, the son of a Gaelic-speaking farm servant. At St. Andrews University he was a distinguished student in arts and divinity and helped to found a student missionary society.
14 juin 2017 · This is a copy of the Thomas Smith’s 1883 biography of the the noted missionary to India, Alexander Duff [1806-1878]. As the author points out, he had both an intimate knowledge of his subject and the co-operation of Duff’s official biographer Mr George Smith.
Today, Alexander Duff is largely forgotten, his memory eclipsed by his younger contemporary, David Livingston. Yet when Duff died in 1878, the Times contained a long obituary, Prime Minister Gladstone eulogised him and Scotland mourned as a nation that had lost its noblest son.
