At this time, guitarist Milo Bonacci (who went on to form Ra Ra Riot) parted ways with the band and was replaced with current guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo (brother of the rapper Sammus), who was attending Cornell University at the time.
The Papercut EP est publié le 29 octobre 2004 et, dans la foulée, Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo remplace Milo Bonacci à la guitare. L'EP connaît un succès non négligeable et il donne naissance, le 22 février 2005, à l’album The Papercut Chronicles.
