Ben Greenwood (born October 6, 1977 in North Carolina - died November 29, 2009) was Rhett and Link's childhood friend. Ben was a legend and gave many people joy with his happy mood. He died at the age of 32 of testicular cancer.
Rhett has stated that the relationship between him and Ben was much stronger than the one between Link and Ben. Rhett has recounted stories of nights spent in the woods or sleepover on Ben's trampolines as times when he felt close and connected to Ben. Both Rhett and Link have stated they felt Ben was extremely intelligent, often reading about new and interesting things before wanting to try them himself. Ben taught himself and Rhett to code, and they both created a text-based role-playing game.
Sometime in late middle school to early high school, Ben was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This caused him to miss school and become isolated in his room, where he could not gather the energy to leave most days. Ben attended online classes while Rhett and Link were both off in College. The three of them kept in contact through infrequent e-mails in which they would often play "catch-up," according to Link.
Ben was diagnosed with testicular cancer, to which he would eventually succumb. While in hospice, Rhett and Link would try to visit him on their way to work, in which they would attempt to convert his spirituality to that of Christ in an effort to help his soul pass peacefully. Ben understood that, despite their spiritual differences, his closest friends cared for him in the way they knew how and prayed with Rhett and Link on their second-to-last meeting.
Ben is often seen as the third member of the Rhett and Link duo, and the pair have stated that his influence on their lives can still be felt in everything they create to date. Link recounts that before his passing, Ben told him, "if you feel something is wrong, don't ignore it, that's what I did."
At Ben's funeral, Rhett and Link performed a song per Ben's request. While they did not sing the Cornhole song, they did opt to perform the Michael Jackson song Ben about a pet rat named Ben.
