When you start with just two cs, you're telling it the matrix only has two columns (and that you want them centered). Then it breaks when you give it data for 5 columns. Then it breaks when you give it data for 5 columns.

I see that it has the effect of reducing the whitespace between the [ and ] and the matrix contents. With @{...} you tell LaTeX to put ... in place of the default intercolumn space, which is applied also at the start and end of the tabular. @user3123159 \left( and \right) should do.
But you could do it in the preamble too, then it would have effect on all matrices and arrays. But it only makes the scaler 1/15 smaller, not the entries of this matrix. Is there a way to make the entries smaller, without typing \scriptstyle for each entries? Maybe something we can change the whole size by 75%, 50% of the content in \begin{equation}...\end{equation}
