James was born in the Netherlands, where the couple had met as both sought refuge during the English Civil War; the conflict ended in 1651 with the defeat of Charles’s forces.

5 juil. 2024 · Lucy Walter was the mistress of Charles II while he was in exile in the Hague. She gave birth to James, Duke of Monmouth, in 1649 and Charles acknowledged paternity. He was far from her first lover and after the affair ended she appears to have led a somewhat dissolute life, dying in Paris in 1658.
