Your first example suggests a municipal swimming pool or some sort of club or organization which is a swimming pool. It suggests you have to go there. If it is the hotel swimming pool, or our or a friend's swimming pool, I think I would say "by the pool".

We go swimming in the pool is possible but, as you say, if you’re at the pool it its obvious that you would swim in the pool water!3 & 4. As you state, would be implied from 1.5.
