The Lavender Scare (littéralement, « La peur violette ») est un film documentaire américain produit et réalisé par Josh Howard, sorti en 2017. Il s’agit de l’ adaptation du livre The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays And Lesbians in the Federal Government de David K. Johnson (2006).
It's standard documentary fare (talking heads, linear narrative arc), but well researched and interesting. I was expecting a deeper exploration of the politics, culture, and impacts of lavender scare during its peak, but the director clearly wanted an "arc of justice" narrative, so focuses mostly on Frank Kameny's crusade against government employment discrimination.
The Lavender Scare is the first documentary film to tell the little-known story of an unrelenting campaign by the federal government to identify and fire all employees suspected of being homosexual. In 1953, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to the security of the country and therefore unfit for government service.
