Ruby Dee und ihr Ehegatte Ossie Davis galten als „Erstes Ehepaar der Bürgerrechtsbewegung“. Im Alter von elf Jahren hielt Ruby Dee ihre erste öffentliche Rede bei einer Demonstration.
