Here, "whereas" is not a "mientras" referring to time but contrast and a common word to indicate "contrast, opposition or difference" is "But", that's why I considered them as synynoms. I was taught that whereas ( mientras->constrast) is NEVER equivalent to while (mientras->time).

28 août 2014 · To me, the second version is wrong because you've chosen the wrong punctuation. Here's how I would punctuate those sentences: The exam was difficult. I think I did well, though. I don't see anything wrong with the first version. If you wanted to avoid using "but" and "though" in the same sentence, you could use "though" or "although" by itself ...
