IITA is a nonprofit organization that conducts agricultural research and development in Africa. It was founded in 1967 and is part of the CGIAR network.
IITA is a research-for-development organization that aims to lift 11.5 million people out of poverty and revitalize 7.5 million hectares of farmland by 2020. It works on biotechnology, natural resource management, social science, plant production, and food technology in sub-Saharan Africa.
The IITA Headquarters was founded in 1967 in Ibadan, Nigeria, and we focus on food staples that are highly important to African farmers. The IITA Headquarters sits on about 1,000 hectares that include a 300-hectare forest reserve that preserves some of the region’s indigenous flora and fauna.
IITA is a CGIAR-supported center that aims to transform agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa by increasing food security, reducing poverty and under-nutrition, and promoting sustainable natural resource management. IITA focuses on five crops and works with partners to outscale its technologies to the rest of the tropics.
