The Chumash are a Native American people of the central and southern coastal regions of California, in portions of what is now Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south to Mt Pinos in the east.
The languages spoken around the missions at Ventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez and La Purisima comprise the most cohesive subgrouping of the Chumash languages, with Ventureño somewhat less closely related to the other three. Scholars refer to these four as the Central Chumash languages.
Cruzeño, also known as Isleño (Ysleño) or Island Chumash, was one of the Chumashan languages spoken along the coastal areas of Southern California. It shows evidence of mixing between a core Chumashan language such as Barbareño or Ventureño and an indigenous language of the Channel Islands.
