The accident at Long Beach that left him in a wheelchair ended a grand prix career that had lasted for 10 years, but set the Swiss on course for a life that has perhaps been even richer and more rewarding than the one that preceded it.
Clay Regazzoni made his F1 debut at the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix. Between 1970 and 1980, he raced for Ferrari, BRM, Shadow, and Williams.
Regazzoni was now a motorsport star and from 1971 he was to dedicate himself almost exclusively to F1. In 1971, he won the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, while in the World Championship he had to settle for three thirds and one sixth place, while with the prototypes he won the Kyalami 9 Hours.
Two stints at Ferrari and scoring Williams's maiden grand prix victory are the clear highlights of Clay Regazzoni's 10-year Formula 1 career.
