John Locke ( prononcé en anglais : /d͡ʒɒn lɒk/) 1, né le 29 août 1632 à Wrington ( Somerset) et mort le 28 octobre 1704 à High Laver ( Essex ), est un philosophe anglais. Il vit à une époque charnière qui voit la fin des guerres de religion, les débuts du rationalisme et une forte opposition à l' absolutisme en Angleterre.

Locke proposa une séparation des pouvoirs et souligna le droit des citoyens à renverser un dirigeant despotique. Toutes ces idées influencèrent les Pères fondateurs des États-Unis.
