In 1932, the university's name was extended in honour of one of the most famous native sons of Frankfurt, the poet, philosopher and writer/dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The university currently has around 45,000 students, distributed across four major campuses within the city.

Goethe University is a large university in the heart of Europe offering undergraduate and advanced degrees in all traditional subject Areas. Students at Goethe University can choose from over 200 degree programmes in 16 faculties at three main campus locations in the city Frankfurt am Main.
The faculty’s nine institutes offer 8 bachelor and master degree programmes, 16 master programmes, the subjects German, English, French, Italian and Spanish for teaching degrees, and the continuing education programme Book and Media Practice.
