Formé en 1985 2, il se compose du rappeur et producteur Q-Tip, du MC Phife Dawg et du DJ et producteur Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Un quatrième membre, le rappeur Jarobi White, quitte le groupe en 1991, après la publication de leur premier album.
