William Basie, dit Count Basie, né le 21 août 1904 à Red Bank et mort le 26 avril 1984 à Hollywood, est un pianiste, organiste et chef d'orchestre de jazz. Son orchestre s'inscrit dans la tradition de Kansas City, ville-berceau du middle jazz orchestral. Il était surnommé la « machine à swing ».

William James " Count " Basie ( / ˈbeɪsi /; August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) [1] was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, he formed the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording.
Count Basie is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all times. He was the arbiter of the big-band swing sound and his unique style of fusing blues and jazz established swing as a predominant music style.

Installé à Harlem (New York) en 1924, il rencontre des pianistes de renom – James P. Johnson, Fats Waller – et commence à travailler dans les clubs. En 1928, adoptant le surnom de Count Basie, il s’intègre à l’orchestre des Blue Devils à Kansas City.
