De son vrai nom Blasko Béla Ferenc Dezco, Bela Lugosi est né le 20 octobre 1882 à Lugos en Hongrie (aujourd'hui Lugoj, en Roumanie). À onze ans, Lugosi s'enfuit de chez lui et vit de petits boulots, notamment au théâtre. Il s'inscrit à l'Académie d'art dramatique de Budapest et débute sur les planches en 1901.
