31 mars 2023 · “Sweet” Charles Sherrell, bassist on many of James Brown’s 1960s hits, died Wednesday after fighting emphysema at the age of 80.
Sherrell pioneered the funk guitar, using his thumping style to provide new urgency to the instrument, and giving a fresh sound to Brown’s numerous late 60s hits like “Say It Loud.” Sherrell quit the band in 1970 due to a financial dispute, and was replaced by Bootsy Collins.
Vocals, bass, keys, backing vocals, songwriter, composer, musical director and bandleader for James Brown and worked with many more musicians.
Sweet Charles Sherrell was born in Nashville Tennessee U.S.A. and started making music when he was 8 years old at school. He began playing trombone for 2 years, trumpet for 2 years and drums for 6 years. Then he attended university T.S.U for 1,5 years music major.
