  2. St Cuthbert's Society is a Bailey college, based on Durham's peninsula next to the River Wear, although it also has other accommodation a few minutes' walk away in Old Elvet. St Cuthbert's retains its title of 'society', although its workings have changed since its formation.

    St Cuthbert's Society is named after St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne (c. 634 - 20 March 687), who lived in Anglo-Saxon Northumbria as a monk, bishop and hermit. St Cuthbert is celebrated every year on his Feast day, the 20th March, and the Society is included in the Cathedral's celebration of the Saint.

The book’s title is, not surprisingly, ‘Traditionally Untraditional’ and sub-titled ‘St Cuthbert’s Society 1988-2003.’ It has just been published by St. Cuthbert’s Association (of former members). It is the first broad review of the Society in the 35 years since Henry Tudor’s centenary history.

  7. St Cuthbert’s most impressive building is 12 South Bailey, dating back to the 17th century. Its grand wooden staircase is similar to another contemporary staircase on North Bailey, reflecting what must have been the canons of good taste among the wealthy of the time.
