Louisa May Alcott in 1857. Hospital Sketches describes a journey to Washington. Immediately upon her arrival, Tribulation Periwinkle must care for wounded men newly arrived from the Battle of Fredericksburg.
This myth that Alcott wrote directly from the hospital, perpetuated both by Alcott and by literary critics, obfuscates the market-driven forces that shaped her writing and created the desire for the myth. The newspaper sketches were read as authentic war writing because wartime journalistic trends demanded
Louisa May Alcott craved action. The Civil War gave her a chance, and she took it. In the Fall of 1862 she applied to serve as a nurse in Washington. On December 11th of that yaer, she received orders to report to the Union Hotel Hospital, a converted tavern. There she set to work.
