The 2000 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXVII Olympiad, officially branded as Sydney 2000, and also known as the Games of the New Millennium, were an international multi-sport event held from 15 September to 1 October 2000 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The Sydney Games marked a real milestone in the achievements of women in sport. For the first time, 54 teams were lead by women carrying their national flag at the opening parade. Australian hockey star Rachael Hawks was given the honour of pronouncing the Olympic oath on behalf of the athletes.
