The American Sportsman is an American television series that aired from 1965 to 1986 on ABC which presented filmed highlights involving the program's hosts and celebrities participating in hunting and/or fishing trips along with outdoor recreational activities such as whitewater kayaking, hang gliding and free climbing.
The American Sportsman: With Curt Gowdy, Joe Foss, Bing Crosby, Phil Harris. One of the first hunting and fishing shows with celebrity participants. It aired on the ABC television network on Sunday afternoons. The show would visit locations in the USA, Canada, Africa, and locations around the globe.

Cheryl Tiegs narrates this sports special of ABC-TV's "American Sportsman". Tieges went to Kenya, Africa with photographer-writer Peter Beard to photograph the "big five" on foot. They encounter huge bull elephants at distances of less than five yards.
From 1965 to 1967, the program was hosted by former South Dakota Republican Governor, American Football League commissioner, and World War II hero Joe Foss; it was later hosted by Grits Gresham, an outdoorsman from Natchitoches, Louisiana, and long-time sports announcer Curt Gowdy.
