  4. Ellis Louis Marsalis Jr.[ 1] (November 14, 1934 – April 1, 2020) was an American jazz pianist and educator. Active since the late 1940s, Marsalis came to greater attention in the 1980s and 1990s as the patriarch of the musical Marsalis family, when sons Branford and Wynton became popular jazz musicians.

  5. Marsalis is the son of the late jazz musician Ellis Marsalis Jr. (pianist), grandson of Ellis Marsalis Sr., and brother of Branford (saxophonist), Delfeayo (trombonist and producer), and Jason (drummer).

The eldest son, Branford, followed in his father's jazz footsteps, gaining initial acclaim through his work with Art Blakey 's Jazz Messengers in 1980 while still a student at Berklee College of Music. He then joined his brother Wynton's quintet in the early 1980s before forming his own ensemble.

  7. Wynton was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 18, 1961, to jazz pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis Jr. and Dolores Marsalis. He is the second of six sons, preceded by Branford Marsalis and followed by siblings Ellis III, Delfeayo, Mboya and Jason.
