Barton Fink, un jeune dramaturge new-yorkais, qui vient de remporter un beau succès à Broadway avec sa première pièce, débarque à Hollywood. Un producteur lui propose d'écrire le scénario de son film. Installé dans un immense hôtel, l'écrivain se retrouve très vite en panne d'inspiration.
