Le groupe est formé par quatre sœurs toutes nées à Philadelphie (Pennsylvanie) : Deborah (« Debbie », « Debra »), née le 9 juillet 1954 ; Joan (« Joni Sledge »), 13 septembre 1956 - 10 mars 2017 ; Kim, née le 21 août 1957 ; Kathy Sledge, née le 6 janvier 1959.
