"The Nine Billion Names of God" is a 1953 science fiction short story by British writer Arthur C. Clarke. The story was among the stories selected in 1970 by the Science Fiction Writers of America as one of the best science fiction short stories published before the creation of the Nebula Awards.
A short story about religion, computers, and the end of the world, Clarke's tale fuses Oriental mysticism with Western science. The monks seek to discover all the names of God by which he is known, and the computer reveals the apocalypse as a result.

The Nine Billion Names of God. Author’s Note: The title story was written, for want of anything better to do, during a rainy weekend at the Roosevelt Hotel. Its basic arithmetic was later challenged by J.B.S. Haldane, but I managed to save the situation by alphanumeric evasions whose precise nature now escapes me.
