Hoyt Wayne Axton (March 25, 1938 – October 26, 1999) was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and actor. He became prominent in the early 1960s, establishing himself on the West Coast as a folk singer with an earthy style and powerful voice.
Johnny's covers of both Highway Patrolman and the title track Johnny 99 are perhaps better than Springsteen's own versions. He excels on these songs and there are plenty of other gems on this album as well. The backing vocals from Hoyt Axton are exceptional, reaching even deeper than Johnny himself.
