Theodore Philip Toynbee (25 June 1916 – 15 June 1981) was a British writer and communist. He wrote experimental novels, and distinctive verse novels, one of which was an epic called Pantaloon, a work in several volumes, only some of which are published.

Philip Toynbee was an English writer and editor best known for novels that experiment with time and symbolical elements. He was the son of the historian Arnold Toynbee and grandson of the classical scholar Gilbert Murray. He was educated at Rugby School and the University of Oxford.

Philip Toynbee was a journalist, public intellectual and novelist who, as a student communist in 1930s Oxford, was once beaten up by Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts. Toynbee became a prominent figure in pre-war Bohemian London and wrote experimental novels, including the multi-volume verse novel Pantaloon.
BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY. Philip was the son of the famous historian Arnold Toynbee. He was educated at Rugby and Christ Church, Oxford, where he was the Union’s first communist president. Worked as a journalist and then in intelligence during the Second World War.
