  1. 2 janv. 2024 · The German letter/grapheme: ß , is either called “Eszett” or “scharfes S”. The name “Eszett” is just a combination of the names of the letters s and z : “Es” and “Zett”. But I don’t really like this name because the modern German ß is usually transliterated as ss rather than as sz . The other name: “scharfes S ...

  2. 16 sept. 2015 · AltGr-a for ä would be much more convenient, but unfortunately that's already taken by á. We need one more principle to solve this, which is as follows: When the combination with the most logical key is already taken, choose another nearby. E.g., the neighbours of the a key are q,w,s,z,x. We already know that AltGr-s is needed for ß. (By the ...

  3. 25 mai 2011 · s and ß form a voiced–voiceless pair like b/p, d/t, or g/k with s representing the voiced s sound and ß representing the voiceless s sound. The normal rules for doubling consonants after short vowels apply, however, ss is used instead of ßß, e.g., so instead of blaßß and haßßen (both with short a, voiceless s) we write blass and hassen.

  4. 13 juil. 2011 · What is the proper way to write an Eszett on paper with a pen? In English we are told to start letters at the top, but the ß only has ends at the bottom, so what is the proper way to draw the letter?

If your keyboard does not have it (or you are writing IN ALL CAPS) you may use ss (SS) instead, but that's really an exception.

  7. 14 avr. 2014 · Officially, there is no such thing. Yes, some typographers have designed a ß to better go along with other capital letters, but it's still a (very) far cry from universal adoption. Since there are no words starting with ß you'd only need it for all caps. Just use SS for now, is my advice, if you must.

  10. 14 déc. 2013 · 1. There is no capital "sharp s", not really. Yes, some fonts have it, and there have been repeated attempts to introduce a majuscule ß, but support is far from widespread. Learners of German would be well-advised to stay away from it. Just use "SS" is you must, and be done with it.
