If you leave your phone in aeroplane mode and disable data roaming but make sure your wi-fi is turned on you'll be able to access the internet and send messages/make phone calls using WhatsApp without running up a mobile bill (as long as you're in a location that offers wi-fi connectivity, which is most places in Barbados).
