4 juin 2024 · David Dixon Porter (born June 8, 1813, Chester, Pa., U.S.—died Feb. 13, 1891, Washington, D.C.) was a U.S. naval officer who held important Union commands in the American Civil War (1861–65). The son of Commodore David Porter, David Dixon Porter served in the Mexican War (1846–48).
When the Civil War began in 1861, David Dixon Porter took command of the Powhatan in an abortive attempt to relieve Fort Pickens, Florida, and soon joined the Union's naval forces in the blockade of the Southern port cities.
