20 oct. 2005 · Shirley Horn began leading her own group in the mid-1950s, and in 1960 recorded her first album, Embers and Ashes, which established her reputation as an exceptional and sensitive jazz vocalist. Born in 1934 in Washington, DC, she studied classical piano as a teenager at Howard University's Junior School of Music.

Shirley Horn (Washington, 1º maggio 1934 – Washington, 20 ottobre 2005) è stata una cantante e pianista di jazz statunitense. Shirley Horn fu una virtuosa del pianoforte fin dalla sua infanzia. Divenne cantante a 17 anni, e registrò il suo primo album di jazz nel 1960 per una piccola etichetta, la Stere-o-craft .
Shirley Horn. Née à Washington (district de Columbia) le 1er mai 1934 et décédée à Cheverly (Maryland) le 20 octobre 2005, la pianiste et chanteuse Shirley Horn reste peu connue en dehors des amateurs de jazz. Elle apprend le piano à l'âge de quatre ans et étudie à l'université de Howard, avant de former son propre trio en 1954.
