This school for boys, girls, and infants was built between 1872 and 1873 by the York National School Society with aid from the state and the central funds of the National Society. The site, at the corner of Bedern and St. Andrewgate, was given by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.

Boys were educated there until 1941, 14 years after it first opened; when the school was ordered to relocate and turned it into a POW camp.
